The North Carolina monument was meant to commemorate the valor, bravery, and courage of the state’s infantrymen during Pickett’s Charge. The figures depicted were designed to appear as if they had just received the command to advance across the bloody battlefield. The faces on the monument reflect the great devotion and strength required to cross that field on July 3, 1863. The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, claimed to have used the actual likenesses of Civil War veterans for his creation.
