The 153rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment’s monument stands on Barlow Knoll, originally called Blocher’s Knoll. Formed in Easton, Pennsylvania, nine months before, the unit fought at Chancellorsville in May 1863. Gettysburg would be their second and final battle. On the afternoon of July 1, 1863, they battled on the knoll but were eventually pushed back by Georgians from John Brown Gordon’s Brigade. Out of the 499 men actively engaged in the battle, the regiment suffered 23 killed, 142 wounded, and 46 missing or captured, totaling 211 casualties, or a 42.3% loss.
