The tree is a living memorial to the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry, who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. The tree’s design imitates the damage caused by artillery fire that killed soldiers and destroyed nature. Of the 208 men from the 90th who fought at Gettysburg, 8 were killed, 45 were wounded, and 40 went missing—a loss of 45% of their number, it was a profound loss for their regiment.
