On the first day of the battle, the regiment advanced to the front lines and engaged in combat until 2 pm. The 74th, one of many all-German regiments, experienced significant changes in leadership during the conflict. Initially, Colonel Adolph Von Hartung led the regiment into battle, but after he was wounded, Lt. Col. Theobald Von Mitzel took command. However, Lt. Col. Von Mitzel was captured during the retreat, leaving Captain Henry Krauseneck in charge of the remaining forces. Captain Krauseneck was later accused of cowardice and forced to resign in January 1864.
