The Virginia Monument was the first Confederate monument built at Gettysburg. Atop it stands a 14-foot bronze statue of General Robert E. Lee on his horse, Traveller. Below, seven Confederate soldiers look across the field where Pickett’s Charge took place. These soldiers represent men from all walks of life who left their homes and trades to serve in the military, reminding us they were more than just soldiers.
